Wilber will always be welcome in my child's library!
Once again, we are transported to the world of Wilber the dog and his boy Oliver, by the playful and imaginative illustrations and writing of Collette Dahl Lorentzen. Although this installation is less dramatic than the first, it's no less delightful. As Oliver takes Wilber camping, we are treated to the colorful and fun illustrations of Wilber taking part in camping activities such as hiking, fishing, and even roasting marshmallows. But what’s more impressive than the incredibly cute drawings and a story of a dog and his boy having some good clean fun out in nature (and without the use of any phones or iPads or screens, I might add!) is the seamless integration of personal accountability and social responsibility. We see Oliver tell Wilbur about how we are responsible for our own actions, and also that our actions can affect others. This book teaches great lessons to our little ones, but perhaps should be required reading for today’s politicians as well! It’s not often you can find a book so wholesome, with important lessons that you might not even notice are being taught because you’re having so much fun reading them. Wilber has done it again; and I, personally, can’t wait to see what other adventures are in store for him in the future.

Nature's magic for the first time!
This book captures the delight children (and adults) experience in a first time visit to a National Park as Wilber, the dog, and his very independent boy, Oliver, prepare for, experience and return from a week long camping trip. With it's charming illustrations, it is a book that connects on multiple levels about the love of nature, how to observe and preserve it and warmth of relationships with good friends. I've given copies of this and the first Wilber book to my grandchildren and their cousins -- all of whom enjoy them greatly.

Lessons on respecting our environment
This is the second Wilber book that I have gotten for my grandchildren. The lesson about respecting and appreciating the outdoors, mountains and wildlife is very special. Hopefully this lesson is also for the adults reading the book. A special gift for any families preparing for a trip with little ones to teach in advance about their responsibility in protecting our environment.

Educational and fun!
This is my second Wilber book and it didn't disappoint. I love that it teaches to follow the rules, an important lesson in life, all while having fun! Again, the illustrations and Wilber himself are adorable. I would recommend this book, especially if camping or visiting a state park is in your child's future.

Children will LOVE Wilbur!
This lovingly written and beautifully illustrated children's book was a treat for the eyes and heart from cover to cover. The playful style will no doubt have children who have recently learned to read returning to this book over and over again. And all the while, they will be learning valuable lessons! I would recommend this book to any family with a young reader. Or, maybe even if the reader is just young at heart. ;-) If you don't want to see any spoilers, read no further! Wilbur is a curious dog who's comically exaggerated ears and proclivity for smelling the world around him remind us of dogs we've all known and loved. His thoughts, emotions, and reactions however, remind us of ourselves. When we learn that Wilbur has a boy, it brings to light both a parallel to our own concept of ownership, but also hints at how our perceptions of the world are molded by our own viewpoint and experience. Wilbur's curiosity and occasional absentmindedness lead him to get lost in a place he has not been to, nor does he understand. This can truly be a terrifying experience for all of us, and our instinct will be to search for what is familiar. When our protagonist is finally reunited with his boy, the sense of relief and joy is nearly palpable. Although no catastrophe has occurred, we are acutely aware that things could have been much worse. We learn through Wilbur's experience that when a situation is bleak, and the outlook dark, sometimes a friend or family member is all we need to get through it. The lessons learned in this wonderful piece of children's literature are numerous and profound, and Collette Dahl Lorentzen manages to teach them without being forceful and heavy-handed, as is all too common in many children's books. Children will learn about life through a sense of shared experience, instead of through preachy dialogue, helping them to internalize and take to heart these important concepts. I personally look forward to Wilbur's next adventure with great anticipation!

Quality books
I appreciate the fun way the author teaches basic skills. It is easy to think all parents teach respect, responsibility & accountability to their children; but not true in today’s society. As a childcare provider I highly recommend reading Collette’s books. Wilbur is lovable & a good example for children. Also enjoyed talking to author in person.

My grandchildren loved the book. I love the lesson to the children about how to be safe with a character, Wilber, that they could relate to and easily understand. The illustrations were great. Can’t wait for the series to continue.
